We can offer you a full week to immerse yourself and live on Fair isle.
A fully arrange holiday completely tailored to your needs and wishes. We will plan all of the details together during a video call or over the phone.
We will cost everything in to the price. Everything is included from transport from Lerwick to Fair isle, accommodation, all meals, knitting materials and courses. We will also arrange a full visit of the island and its landmarks including tours of the lighthouse, museum, North Haven Beach and coastline. We offer a great creative space for you to start or finish a project, to learn about the knitting tradition of the island, or develop your own designs.
You can come with a friend or take a chance on making a new one.
Thomas learned to use the knitting machine and loves it so maybe partners will be interested into entering the knitting world that way.
There are only 2 places per course, the bedroom in shared.
Marie spent five years studying textile design in France (at l' École Supérieur des Arts Appliqués et du textile in Roubaix). She perfected her hand knitting, machine and finishing techniques on Fair Isle working almost three years with Mati Ventrillon. Marie has the in depth knowledge and experience to share her traditional island knitting skills with you.
She likes working with colours and designing and mixing traditional Fair Isle patterns. Step by step, Marie will patiently guide you through the use of a flat bed knitting machine. No previous experience is needed. Knitting on the machine always needs to be combined with hand work, grafting, mattress stitch or even hand knitting. A jumper is made with about 50% on the machine and 50% by hand.
We offer the opportunity to come to us empty handed and leave with a finished piece. You can also come to learn about the island and patterns, test colour combinations and leave with the wool to hand knit your own jumper. We will tailor the course to your hopes and dreams.
You will have access to a collection of books and patterns, to nourish your curiosity and inspire you. We also have pencils and water colours, start with a drawing, if you feel like it. The island scenery can inspire you or previous research. We have around 80 colours of Jamiesion's wool for you to choose from, so you can experiment to create the perfect colourway for your next big hand-knitting project or the collection of accessories you would like to machine-knit during your stay.
As you may know getting to Fair Isle can sometimes be quite a challenge.
In order for you to not worry or miss on any of the knitting activity, we will block book two weeks per course within our calendar in order for you to be able to arrive in the unlikely circumstance of a delayed flight to Fair Isle. We will start once you are on the island. For example, if on Monday the weather doesn't allow the flight to come and you can only come on the following Wednesday you will be able to stay 7 nights from Weds to Weds and stay safely in Lerwick prior to your flight. You will need to also allows for plenty of time for your return flight out of Shetland. There is many things to see and do in Shetland, you’ll never be bored.
